Sadboy Apex – thanks for the tragedy, I need it for my art @MicahChhong

Sadboy Apex goes into great detail for his first official video, “thanks for the tragedy, i need it for my art”:

“thanks for the tragedy, I need it for my art” is my first music video. It is inspired heavily by the visual storytelling of Indie film artists. We started with a simple single location shoot revolving around a handful of scenes. The transitions were kept as minimalist as possible so that we could dress them up with post-animation. The compositions of most of the shots left empty space to allow for the animator to animate characters and lyrics.

Thematically, the animations start out light as a play on the modern hip-hop music video. As the music video progresses and both the lyrics and visual style becomes more rapid and unhinged, the animation becomes heavier. The video ends with the main character committing suicide in the bathtub. As the character becomes more resolute in this decision, he becomes more disconnected with the real world. We used animation to represent this distance from reality.

From the premise of a sad song mourning the distance between the singer and a lover, the music video adds layers of depth and commentary on the singers own decisions that may have led to the growing distance. This colouring of the source material, adds the depth that could have only been added through a visual medium.

Sadboy Apex is a British-born, Northwest-transplant fresh on the music scene. Starting in late-2018, he quickly built a core fan following as an Emo-Trap artist on Soundcloud. His fans connected with his unique blend of Seattle grunge, 2000s pop punk, and well-read indie pop over dark trap beats. Sadboy Apex provides expressive and vulnerable lyrics addressing issues of post-modern depression, hyperconsumerism, and absurdist philosophy.

In less than a year, Sadboy Apex has released more than 30 tracks and has featured on over 5 albums. His most popular tracks have collected over 50K listens on Soundcloud with worldwide appeal. His unique visual aesthetic has captured the hearts of fans on Instagram with a growing list of engaged followers. His take on high-fashion has also landed him several brand deals with boutique fashion houses.

With influences ranging from Nirvana to The Cure to Lil Uzi Vert, as well as fellow Sadboy artists like Lil Peep, Lil Lotus, and Smrtdeath; Sadboy Apex seeks to continue to hone his craft and champion the new-wave of Grunge inspired Trap.
