Nicki Minaj Tells Ellen She’s Single
Ellen DeGeneres sure knows how to get the most out of the rappers she interviews, and with Nicki Minaj on her show on Thursday (April 7) the daytime talkshow host lands another exclusive. In the above clip, Nicki skirts the issue as to whether she’s ready to move forward in her relationship with Meek Mill, saying instead that she’s single and receives gifts from a boy that likes her.
Starting things off, Ellen asks about the eye-popping diamond ring Meek gave Nicki in December, mistakingly calling it an engagement ring. “First of all, that’s not an engagement ring,” Nicki said in response. “I have two rings from this boy who likes me. He said that that’s my second ring and if I get a third ring that that would be the engagement ring.”
When Ellen asks if she’s ready for that third ring, Nicki remains tentative. “I don’t know,” she said. “We’re still figuring each other out. In fact, I don’t even want to say I’m in a relationship anymore cause I think when people hear that, they go to a mean place. I used to say I’m not in a relationship even though I was in a 12-year relationship. Then now, [I’m] just going back to that and saying I’m single.”
Nicki then gives an example of how, on Valentine’s Day, many speculated that she and Meek had broken up because she hadn’t posted her gifts from him to Instagram. The truth was though, that they had spent the whole day together.
“It just made me realize, no matter how great your life is, you can’t even impress people. You just have to do you and make yourself happy,” she said. “And forget trying to get everyone’s approval. It’s better to just keep those things sacred. So now, I don’t really care to say I’m in a relationship. There’s a boy that likes me, that’s all.” She continued: “He and I are just two souls right now passing through the universe and I don’t know what’s going to happen and I have learned over the years to just let things be and come and go.”
Whether this new found change of attitude has anything to do with Meek’s current house arrest is hard to say, though the rumor mill has alleged that the confinement has put a strain on their relationship. As recently as a month ago though, the two confirmed that all is well through various social media posts.
