Radio One Bans All K. Michelle Music

    April 16, 2016 /

R&B singer K.Michelle released her third album, “More Issues Than Vogue” (Atlantic Records) on Feb. 19 and the CD’s title may have been a foretelling of what was to come. The Memphis-bred artist—whose birth name is Kimberly Michelle Pate—has a big issue now in real life because the broadcast conglomerate Radio One owned by media mogul Cathy Hughes has issued a mandate across all stations to yank her music from their playlists. Several Radio One executives spoke to AlwaysAList.com and confirmed that you will no longer hear any songs by K.Michelle—past, present or any artist that features her on a collaboration—due to her bailing on several Radio One promotional events…

N.W.A Shuts Down Gene Simmons During Rock Hall Induction Speech

    April 10, 2016 /

Kiss’ Gene Simmons has a lot of opinions — one of them, probably unsurprisingly, is that “rap will die.” He recently told Rolling Stone, “I am looking forward to the death of hip-hop,” a stance that some rappers naturally took issue with. Well, during N.W.A’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class of 2016, MC Ren shut down Simmons’ prediction in no uncertain terms at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Friday (April 8). “I want to say to Mr. Gene Simmons that hip-hop is here forever,” Ren said. “We’re supposed to be here.” While most of the Barclays Center responded with cheers, a few sour boos could be heard throughout the…

Judge Allows Meek Mill To Release New Music

    April 10, 2016 /

Meek Mill can make music again after being put on house arrest but ONLY under certain conditions according to TMZ reports: Sources connected to the case tell us Meek got an order of clarification 2 weeks after his sentencing. The judge had said he could not record ANY music during his 90 days of house arrest, but then spelled it out in more detail. We’re told the rule is Meek can release music in order to “protect his brand,” but it has to be on FREE platforms like SoundCloud and YouTube. This explains why he dropped that remix of Drake’s “Summer Sixteen” a few days ago. It was totally legal…

    Beyoncé Responds to ‘Formation’ Backlash

    April 6, 2016 /

Beyoncé is set to be featured on the cover of the latest issue of Elle Magazine, and she took the time to address various criticism, including backlash towards her latest music video, “Formation.” When the video initially released, it geared fans up for a new album from the singer after being away for some time. However, many were not pleased with images in Beyoncé’s video, which made references to the Black Lives Matter movement, along with critiquing police officers’ excessive use of force. The singer didn’t shy away from those who were upset, saying: “I mean, I’m an artist and I think the most powerful art is usually misunderstood. But…

Pimp C Documentary ‘Long Live the Pimp’

    April 6, 2016 /

The man born Chad Butler, aka J.R. Ewing, Jack Tripper, Mick Jagger, Tony Snow, Sweet (James) Jones and most famously Pimp C, was one-half of the monumental Southern rap duo Underground Kingz (UGK), who, alongside DJ Screw, Swisha House and Three 6 Mafia, revolutionized hip-hop in the ’90s with their instantly recognizable meshing of hip-hop hi-hats and 808s with soul ballads, chopped and screwed down to a smooth, purple-stained tempo. Hailing from Port Arthur, Texas, Butler’s collaboration with Bun B, the other half of UGK, took them to the “toppermost of the poppermost,” to borrow a phrase from The Beatles. The duo eventually rose to the peak of the hip-hop…

Jay Z Sues Early TIDAL Owners For Falsifying Subscriber Numbers

    April 5, 2016 /

Jay Z’s time with TIDAL has a been an up and down experience, but he feels that may not be his fault. The rapper and owner of the streaming service bought the company in 2015 from a Swedish tech company named Aspiro for $56 Million USD, but feels he was mislead with the accuracy of subscriber numbers prior to ownership. TIDAL had to more say in an issued statement, saying: “It became clear after taking control of Tidal and conducting our own audit that the total number of subscribers was actually well below the 540,000 reported to us by the prior owners. “As a result, we have now served legal…
