If what you seek doesn’t exist yet, “be the change” and create it! That’s what former Celtics star Ray Allen and his wife, Shannon Brown, are doing.

After struggling to feed their son, who has Type 1 diabetes, healthy food on-the-go, the couple decided that it was time to invest in a vision which might benefit other families striving to live and eat better.

Shannon, who is a cooking show host, said in a press release:

“I had an aha moment where I realized I couldn’t sit around helpless waiting for someone else to create a fast-food option that met our family’s dietary needs. As we did our research it became obvious that this wasn’t a struggle unique to us, families everywhere are looking for convenience without compromise.”

So, inspired and equipped with all the resources necessary to launch Grown, the former NBA basketball all-star and his wife got to work, reports The Miami Herald.

Grown was conceptualized by Shannon and a team of nutrition experts. Executive Chef Todd Kiley of Rainforest Cafe helped create the menu, which will feature a number of locally-sourced and organic breakfast, lunch, and dinner items.

In addition to providing incredibly healthy offerings, Grown will be as environmentally friendly as possible. The 1,900-square-foot space will include a rooftop garden where local farmers will grow vegetables, greens, and herbs, which the restaurant’s kitchen will utilize. To cut down on waste, the menus and kids meal packaging will all be plantable.

Grown’s interior will be constructed from 100-year-old reclaimed barn wood. In addition, an interactive iPad bar which will encourage kids to play nutritional and fitness-themed games.

The restaurant will have drive-through, carry-out, and quick grab-and-go options.

“People want to be healthier, eat cleaner and feel better about what they’re putting in their bodies,” said Ray Allen, who is currently a free agent. “I know this from personal experience, and when Grown opens it will very much be a concept unlike anything else, designed to be accessible by everyone, from the weekend warrior to the soccer mom and anyone in between.”

The project, which is the result of six years of “conceptualizing, planning, assembling an amazing team, scouting locations and building our flagship,” according to Shannon, will take root next month and blossom as it grows in popularity.
